Academic Programs The undergraduate curriculum in Family, Child, and Consumer Sciences (FCCS) includes two areas of concentration: (1) Human Services Management and (2) Consumer Sciences. A collaborative program in Early Childhood Education: PreK-3 Teacher Certification is offered through the College of Education. Families are complex and diverse, and an integrative approach to the relationships among individuals, families, and their multiple environments is needed to better understand and effectively work with families. Employers value family, child, and consumer sciences trained professionals who can apply research- and theory-based knowledge to their practice. FCCS graduates work in a wide variety of settings. General education courses, Human Ecology core and professional preparation courses, and supporting courses from other disciplines help prepare professionals who will support families in a changing world. Professional preparation includes courses in family resource management, family dynamics, child and adolescent development, consumer economics, and family policy. Supporting courses are taken in economics, education, management, marketing, sociology, social work, and psychology. An internship is required. Some flexibility in professional course selection allows for unique interests. Faculty advisers are available to consult about professional preparation. Students completing the FCCS curriculum are eligible to apply for positions in government or in the private sector that relate to administration and management of family services programs, management of family resources, and consumer economics.
Human services is an interdisciplinary field with a wide range of opportunities available upon graduation. In the Human Services Management concentration, students learn about family dynamics and relationships, family resource management, and child development. Students learn how to use that knowledge in educating others about family life and/or advocating for a more family-friendly society.
The Early Childhood Administration & Leadership concentration (ECAL)
Students can be certified to teach pre-kindergarten through the third grade by successfully completing the Early Childhood Education: PK-3 Teacher Certification program that is offered jointly with the College of Education and by applying for Louisiana teacher certification in the area.
