Student Research

Undergraduate

Dr. Joan Benedict is working with a Chancellor's Future Leaders in Research undergraduate student on a research project that looks at the social interaction of children with special needs in inclusive settings. The student will co-present the data at the National Association for the Education of Young Children and is included in an article under review.

Under the direction of Dr. Betsy Garrison and as part of a larger longitudinal, extramurally-funded research project, three undergraduate students have worked on research projects. All projects have been presented at national conferences and have been subsequently published. One project is published in the Undergraduate Research Journal for the Human Sciences.

Under the direction of Dr. Sarah Pierce, an undergraduate student is working on the "Predictors of Caregiver Sensitivity Project" using the "Caregiver Interaction Scale" (Arnett) to code videotapes of caregivers' interactions with young children.

Graduate

Under the direction of Dr. Betsy Garrison and as part of larger longitudinal, extramurally-funded research projects, five master's and four doctoral students are working/have worked on research projects. These projects have resulted in conference presentations and publications in such journals as Family and Consumer Sciences Research Journal and Women and Health.

Under the direction of Dr. Diane Burts, Judi McCaslin conducted a qualitative case study that recorded and analyzed the professional development of an elementary teacher as she studied developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) and pursued her Pre-K and Kindergarten certification. The study focused on the changes in the teacher's classroom practices as well as the supports and barriers to her growth in using DAP. McCaslin also reviewed the researcher's own practices as a mentor and a source of support for DAP and the changes in those roles.
