Learning Opportunities

Students' career aspirations drive assignments and expectations of the degree program. Teaching (instructor of record) is encouraged for all PhD students planning a career in higher education. Following are several areas ***

Family Stress and Coping
Using a family stress perspective, graduate students have the opportunity to develop scientific expertise about families and their stress, including resiliency across research, teaching and outreach.  Because of the expertise of the faculty in FCCS at LSU, family stress is studied using a variety of approaches, qualitatively, quantitatively and mixed methods, and within and across time.  We also study the influence of family stress on children's development and have turned our attention to family resiliency and disasters. We are collaborating with other Disaster Scientists both within and outside of LSU, with the LSU Hurricane (link to http://hurricane.lsu.edu/ ) and Life Course and Aging (link to http://www.lsuagingstudies.com ) Centers and EDEN (link to www.agctr.lsu.edu/eden ).   Full-time students may be offered paid assistantships to work on research or outreach projects.

Parenting
The division of Family, Child, and Consumer Sciences in the School of Human Ecology at LSU offers graduate students opportunities to develop expertise in parenting through coursework, research, and outreach programs. Faculty approach the study of parenting from multiple perspectives pulling from research traditions in developmental psychology, family sociology, and education to support an ecological approach to the study of parenting. Opportunities are available for students to participate in both basic and applied research activities and for students to work with faculty to disseminate and evaluate parenting education programs. Full-time students may be offered paid assistantships to work on research or outreach projects.

Developmentally Appropriate Practice (DAP)
Graduate students have opportunities to participate in coursework, research, and outreach programs focused on developmentally appropriate classroom practices. Building upon the nationally and internationally known "LSU Studies," students can explore a particular aspect of DAP such as teachers' beliefs and practices, teacher change, child outcomes, or social interactions of children with disabilities in inclusive settings. Opportunities are available for students to work with faculty on research or outreach projects. Full-time students may be offered paid assistantships.
