Goals/Learning Objectives
for the BS in Family, Child, and Consumer Sciences
Students successfully completing the degree program will be able to:
-
apply child and family theories and empirically
derived knowledge to tasks they will face in their chosen careers
-
demonstrate knowledge of child and family policies, agencies,
and institutions including organizations that support child and family professionals during
their careers
-
apply appropriate (interpersonal and/or resource) management skills
to tasks they will face in their chosen careers
-
apply appropriate written and oral communications skills to tasks
they will face in their chosen careers
-
choose and use appropriate technology to assist with tasks they will face
in their chosen careers
The specific content knowledge, skill sets, and application tasks vary across the three concentration areas. Likewise, courses differ in the knowledge, skill sets, and application tasks that they emphasize and assess.
Evaluation Procedures
Within each course, assessments are used to evaluate students' course-specific knowledge and the application tasks relevant to the course. (Are the students learning the material? Can they apply their knowledge in problem-solving situations?)
Post-graduation surveys (Do alumni feel they were prepared for the needs of their career? Where the specific skills they need addressed in the curriculum?)
Interviews with graduating students (Do they feel that they have been provided an opportunity to practice and develop specific skills?)
Evaluations of knowledge and skills by internship and student teaching supervisors (Do the interns or student teachers posses the knowledge and skills they need to BEGIN a career in their field?)
Internal curriculum review (Does curriculum offer students the opportunity to practice and develop the skills they need?)
Curriculum review by potential employers (Are the appropriate skills and content domains addressed in our curriculum?)
Curriculum review by accrediting bodies
Research study of beginning pre-k and kindergarten teachers' (masters' thesis)
How the evaluations are being used to improve the program:
- To make major (new courses, specializations) and minor (new assignments
within a course) changes to curriculum.
- In response to evaluation feedback new curriculum changes are being proposed for
each of the three concentration areas. The curriculum changes include both major
and minor changes to the curriculum.
- To identify skills that are adequately addressed within the curriculum
as well as skills that are not adequately addressed or that have not been explicitly identified
as goals or learning objectives.
- In response to evaluation feedback the new curriculum changes
will incorporate
additional field experience and internship hours throughout
the junior and senior year
